ASHBY ST MARY WAR MEMORIAL

(Part of the HISTORY page)

WE WILL REMEMBER THEM

Ashby St Mary's War Memorial stands within the churchyard of the church of St. Mary the Virgin, Ashby St. Mary.
The names of four servicemen with connections to Ashby or the immediate area are shown on it, each of whom sadly perished during World War 1 and 2.
The four named are -
                              Private Ernest W. Bush
                              Able Seaman Herbert V. Chambers
Company Sergeant Major William E. Starman
                              Private John Stanley Cotton

In volumes 1 and 2 below can be found background information of all the above named, the wartime action they were involved in, their regiments, copies of official wartime records and citations, occasional photos and personal notes, plus maps and pictures of the French war cemeteries in which they now rest.
In the Appendices document the surnames of each of the relatives of those named on Ashby's war memorial is shown at the base of each page.
Please be aware, as one might expect, some of the details in Volumes 1 and 2 are both thought-provoking and moving.

The details contained in the historical accounts have been researched, compiled and produced by Terry Kitt of Ashby.  The information gathered is accurate as far as possible. It was collated from online research sites, Norfolk Museum records and Norfolk Regiment Records and information received from John Ling on the Starman family.

If however any inaccuracies are identified by readers or any additional information and photos could be made available, this would be appreciated. Please contact Terry Kitt on 01508 480954 or by Email at tmckitt1@gmail.com - with thanks
